The Sunnah is the second source of Islamic guidance — the Prophet's ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) words and example that show how to live what the Quran commands.
The Sunnah is the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) — his words, actions, approvals, and manner of living. It is the second primary source of Islamic guidance after the Quran.
The Quran commands us to pray but does not describe the exact movements. The Quran commands zakat but does not specify the percentages. The Quran tells us to fast in Ramadan but does not detail the rules. The Sunnah provides all of this detail — it shows us how to live what the Quran commands.
Quran 59:7
Hadith (plural: ahadith) are narrations of what the Prophet ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) said, did, or approved. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ memorized and transmitted these narrations to the next generation, who transmitted them to the next, and so on — until they were collected and written into major hadith compilations.
Muslim scholars developed an entire science to verify the authenticity of hadith — examining the chains of narrators, the character of each narrator, and whether the text is consistent with the Quran and other established narrations.
