Before Tawheed, before the pillars, before fiqh — there is knowing who ALLAH is. This is the foundation that everything else rests on.
Islam is built on one idea above all others: ALLAH is One, and ALLAH alone deserves to be worshipped.
Everything else in Islam — the prayers, the fasting, the Quran, the moral code — only makes full sense when you know who ALLAH is. Without that foundation, the rest is rules without meaning.
The Quran itself begins here. The very first full verse after the opening Bismillah is a declaration about ALLAH:
Quran 1:2
Not “Lord of Muslims” or “Lord of the righteous” — Lord of the worlds. Everything that exists is under His lordship. This is how the Quran opens: with the vastness and completeness of ALLAH's ownership over all creation.
ALLAH is the Arabic name for God — not one of many gods, but the One and only Creator and Sustainer of everything. The word ALLAH has no plural form and no feminine form. It cannot refer to any other being. It is a name that belongs only to Him.
The Quran gives many names and attributes of ALLAH, but Surah Al-Ikhlas — one of the shortest surahs — is considered the most complete description of ALLAH's oneness in a few short verses:
Qul huwa Allahu Ahad — Allahu Samad — Lam yalid wa lam yulad — Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad
Say: He is ALLAH, One. ALLAH, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him.
Quran 112:1–4
Four verses. They rule out every false conception of God: ALLAH has no children, no parents, no equal, and no one who can be compared to Him. He is self-sufficient — He does not need anything from creation.
The Quran states clearly why ALLAH created human beings and the jinn:
Quran 51:56
This verse is the answer to the question every human being eventually asks: why am I here? The answer Islam gives is clear — you were created to know ALLAH and to worship Him.
ALLAH also directly addresses all people with the call to worship:
Quran 2:21–22
Notice the connection: ALLAH is the Creator of everything you rely on — the earth, the sky, the rain, the food. The command to worship is grounded in gratitude and recognition of what ALLAH has done.
One of the most important things to understand about ALLAH is that He is not distant or unaware. He knows everything — the open and the hidden, the spoken and the unspoken:
This is not meant to be frightening — it is meant to be a source of confidence. When you call on ALLAH, He hears you. When you are struggling and no one around you knows, ALLAH knows. When you do something good that no one sees, ALLAH sees it and it is recorded.
Every surah of the Quran (except one) begins: Bismillahi ar-rahmani ar-raheem — In the name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Two of ALLAH's most repeated names are Al-Rahman and Al-Raheem — both rooted in the Arabic word for mercy. Al-Rahman refers to the vast, all-encompassing mercy ALLAH has for all of creation. Al-Raheem refers to the special, ongoing mercy He has for the believers.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) taught that ALLAH has 100 parts of mercy. He sent only one part to the world — and from that one part comes all the compassion and tenderness you see between creation. The remaining 99 parts ALLAH has kept for the Day of Judgment.(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Knowing ALLAH is not just knowing His power and majesty. It is knowing His mercy, His love for those who turn to Him, and His readiness to forgive.
Without knowing who ALLAH is, Islam becomes a list of rules. With knowing who ALLAH is, those same rules become a relationship.
When you pray five times a day, it is not because you were commanded to fill hours. It is because ALLAH — the One who created you and sustains you — invited you to speak to Him five times a day.
When you fast, it is not just discipline. It is obedience to the One who knows you completely and who promises that it is for your benefit.
Knowledge of ALLAH — called ma'rifat ALLAH in Arabic — is the foundation of Islamic learning. Every step in this path leads back to it.
