A step-by-step walkthrough of wudu — the ritual purification required before prayer. Take your time with each step. After a few practices, it becomes natural.
The steps of wudu are grounded in a direct command from ALLAH:
Quran 5:6
The exact method — the order of steps, the number of repetitions, and the additional details — was taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) through his own practice and his instruction to wash carefully and properly.
Perform each step in the order shown. Each washing step is ideally done three times, though once is enough for the wudu to be valid.
Right before left: When washing limbs — both arms and both feet — always start with the right side before the left. This is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him).
Read through the 10 steps once. Then go to the sink and practice them slowly, in order. Do this two or three times. After a few days of practice, the steps become natural and quick.
Most Muslims complete wudu in two to three minutes once it is learned. At first, it may take longer. That is completely normal.
If you are unsure whether you performed a step correctly, simply repeat it. ALLAH knows you are learning.
