Introduction
Wudu (وضوء — wudoo') is the ritual purification performed before prayer (salah) and certain other acts of worship. It is an act of obedience to ALLAH and a preparation — physical and spiritual — for standing before Him in prayer.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ فَٱغْسِلُوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْمَرَافِقِ وَٱمْسَحُوا۟ بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَٱغْسِلُوا۟ أَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكَعْبَيْنِ
“O you who believe, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands to the elbows, and wipe over your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles.”
What Requires Wudu?
You must have wudu to:
- Perform the five daily prayers (salah)
- Touch or handle the physical Quran
- Perform the tawaf (circling) of the Ka'bah during Hajj or Umrah
The Steps of Wudu
Before You Begin
Make the intention (niyyah) in your heart that you are performing wudu for the sake of ALLAH. The intention does not need to be said aloud.
Begin by saying: Bismillah (بسم الله) — "In the name of ALLAH"
Step 1: Wash the Hands
Wash both hands three times, ensuring water reaches between the fingers.
Step 2: Rinse the Mouth
Take water into the mouth, swirl it around, and spit it out. Repeat three times.
Step 3: Rinse the Nose
Sniff water into the nose and blow it out. Repeat three times.
Step 4: Wash the Face
Wash the entire face — from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear — three times.
Step 5: Wash the Arms
Wash the right arm from fingertips to and including the elbow, three times. Then wash the left arm the same way.
Step 6: Wipe Over the Head
Wet the hands and wipe them over the head once — from the front hairline to the back of the head and return.
Step 7: Wipe the Ears
Using the same water on the hands, insert the index fingers into the ears and wipe the outer ears with the thumbs. Do this once.
Step 8: Wash the Feet
Wash the right foot including the ankle three times, ensuring water reaches between the toes. Then wash the left foot the same way.
After Wudu
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) taught that after completing wudu, one should say: "Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh" — "I testify that there is no god except ALLAH alone, with no partner, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger."

Remember These Rules
- Right before Left — Wash the right side before the left for hands and feet
- Three times each — Most steps are done three times; the head wipe is done once
- Continuity — Complete wudu without long interruption
- Intention — The intention in the heart is what makes wudu an act of worship
What Breaks Wudu (Nullifiers)
Wudu is broken by:
- Any discharge from the front or back passage (including passing wind)
- Deep sleep (lying down and sleeping soundly)
- Loss of consciousness
Wudu is not broken by: minor bleeding, vomiting, or touching the opposite gender (according to most scholars).
If Water Is Unavailable: Tayammum
If water is unavailable or its use would cause harm, tayammum (dry ablution using clean earth or dust) is permitted.
يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلْعُسْرَ
“ALLAH intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.”
