Before learning how to pray, it helps to understand why. Salah is not a ritual that Muslims invented — it is a direct command from ALLAH with a clear purpose.
Before anything else, ALLAH tells us why we were created:
Quran 51:56
This single verse answers one of the deepest human questions: Why am I here? The answer is to worship ALLAH. And the heart of that worship — the practice that ALLAH made central to every Muslim's day — is salah.
Salah — the five daily prayers — is not a Muslim tradition that developed over time. It was commanded directly by ALLAH in the Quran:
Quran 4:103
The Arabic word used here — kitaban mawqutan — means a written, obligatory decree at fixed times. Prayer is not left to personal preference or convenience. It is prescribed at set times throughout the day. This structure is intentional: it keeps ALLAH in the Muslim's awareness from morning until night.
Hadith — Sahih al-Bukhari 8 / Sahih Muslim 16
Salah is the second pillar — immediately after the declaration of faith. It is the most regular act of worship a Muslim performs, every single day of their life.
Prayer is not just an obligation — it is a protection and a connection. ALLAH describes its effect clearly:
Quran 29:45
A Muslim who prays consistently — who stands before ALLAH five times every day — is repeatedly reminded of their values, their purpose, and who they are. That constant reminder makes it harder to drift toward harmful actions.
Quran 2:43
Prayer is also an act done together — with millions of other Muslims around the world, bowing and prostrating at similar times every day. It connects the individual to the community of believers.
ALLAH commanded prayer, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) demonstrated exactly how to perform it. Muslims do not pray in ways they invented themselves — they follow the method taught by the Prophet ﷺ directly.
Hadith — Sahih al-Bukhari
This is why learning to pray means learning the Prophet's method — his standing, his bowing, his prostration, and his words. The following steps in this path teach you that method, one piece at a time.
If you are reading this as a beginner or a new Muslim, know this: ALLAH is kind. He knows you are at the beginning. He does not require perfection from you before you start. He requires sincerity and effort.
Start now, improve always: The most important step is to begin. Read through this path, learn wudu, understand the basic movements, and start praying as best as you can. ALLAH sees your effort and rewards it.
Next Step
Before you can pray, you need to purify yourself. The next step explains what wudu is and why it is required before salah.
