Your First Prayer

Introduction

Prayer (Salah) is the second pillar of Islam and the most regular act of worship in a Muslim’s life. Five times every day, a Muslim pauses — whatever they are doing — and returns to their Creator.

Before praying, you must perform Wudu — ritual purification. Together, Wudu and Salah form the core of daily Islamic practice.

The Prophet ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) on Prayer

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) described Salah as “the pillar of the religion.” Without it, nothing else stands properly.

Step 1: Wudu — Ritual Purification

Wudu (وضوء — wudoo’) is the ritual washing performed before prayer. It is both a physical and spiritual preparation for standing before ALLAH.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ فَٱغْسِلُوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْمَرَافِقِ

“O you who believe, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands to the elbows, and wipe over your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles.”

The Steps of Wudu

Make the intention (niyyah) in your heart. No need to say it aloud.

Say: Bismillah (بسم الله) — “In the name of ALLAH”

1Wash both hands three times, between the fingers
2Rinse the mouth three times
3Rinse the nose three times
4Wash the face three times — from hairline to chin, ear to ear
5Wash the right arm to the elbow, three times; then the left arm
6Wipe the head once — front to back and return
7Wipe the ears once — index fingers inside, thumbs outside
8Wash the right foot to the ankle, three times; then the left foot

—Most steps done three times; head wipe is done once
—Complete wudu without long interruption

What Breaks Wudu?

Wudu is broken by: any discharge (including passing wind), deep sleep, or loss of consciousness. It is not broken by: minor bleeding, vomiting, or touching the opposite gender (according to most scholars).

Step 2: Salah — The Five Daily Prayers

Structure of Each Prayer

Each prayer consists of raka’at (units): Fajr = 2, Dhuhr = 4, Asr = 4, Maghrib = 3, Isha = 4.

Within each rak’ah:

1Standing — Recite Al-Fatihah and additional Quran
2Bowing (Ruku') — Say "Subhana Rabbi al-Azeem" (Glory to my Lord, the Magnificent)
3Standing again — Say "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah" (ALLAH hears those who praise Him)
4Prostration (Sujood) — Forehead on the ground; say "Subhana Rabbi al-A'la" (Glory to my Lord, the Most High)
5Sitting briefly — Between two prostrations
6Second prostration — Same as the first

The Essential: Al-Fatihah

Every rak’ah begins with Surah Al-Fatihah — the opening chapter of the Quran. It is the most recited text in the world, repeated at minimum 17 times a day.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

“All praise is due to ALLAH, Lord of all the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path.”

How to Start — Step by Step

1Learn Wudu first — practice the steps until they become natural

5Start with Fajr — the two rak'ah dawn prayer is the simplest starting point

Don’t Be Overwhelmed

Every Muslim was once a beginner. The Prophet ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) was patient and gentle with new Muslims. ALLAH accepts sincere effort. Start with what you know and keep learning — that is all that is asked of you.
