Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) is the final prophet and messenger sent by ALLAH to all of humanity. He was born in Makkah around 570 CE and received the first revelation at the age of forty. Over the next 23 years, the Quran was revealed to him — the complete and preserved final guidance for all people until the end of time. His message was the same as every prophet before him: worship ALLAH alone.
Who Was Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him)?
Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) is the Seal of the Prophets — the last in the long line of messengers ALLAH sent to humanity, beginning with Adam (Peace Be Upon Him).
مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِن رَّسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of ALLAH and the Seal of the Prophets.”
He was not sent to one nation or one people — his message was for all of humanity across all time:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا كَافَّةً لِّلنَّاسِ بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا
“And We have not sent you except comprehensively to mankind as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.”
قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ جَمِيعًا
“Say: O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of ALLAH to you all.”
The Story
The Beginning of Revelation
Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) was born in Makkah, Arabia. Before prophethood, he was known among his people for his honesty and trustworthiness. At the age of forty, while in seclusion at the Cave of Hira, the first revelation came:
اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
“Read in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous — Who taught by the pen — Taught man that which he knew not.”
These were the first verses of the Quran — revealed by the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) (Peace Be Upon Him). According to Sahih al-Bukhari, when the revelation first came, Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) returned home trembling and said: "Cover me, cover me." His wife Khadijah (may ALLAH be pleased with her) comforted and supported him.
The Quran was revealed over the next 23 years — sometimes a few verses, sometimes longer passages — each time through the Angel Jibril (Peace Be Upon Him).
His Message: Worship ALLAH Alone
Like every prophet before him, Muhammad's ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) core message was Tawheed — the absolute oneness of ALLAH:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدُونِ
“And We did not send any messenger before you except that We revealed to him: There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.”
He did not bring a new religion in the sense of breaking from all before him. He completed and sealed the message that Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (Peace Be Upon Them All) all carried: worship ALLAH alone, without partner or rival.
His Character
The Quran describes his character in direct terms:
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
He is also described as a mercy to all creation — not only to Muslims:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
His Example — A Model to Follow
The Quran commands believers to follow his example:
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of ALLAH an excellent example.”
His life — his worship, his conduct with people, his patience in difficulty, his generosity, his justice — is recorded in the hadith. Every Muslim is called to follow his example as an act of obedience to ALLAH.
The Quran: His Greatest Sign
Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) performed no signs of his own. He pointed to the Quran as the greatest evidence of his prophethood — a book that those who heard it in Arabic, including eloquent poets and scholars, could not produce anything like:
وَإِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِ
“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our servant, then produce a chapter like it.”
The Quran — the final revelation — is itself the lasting sign of his prophethood, preserved in its exact original form to this day.
What This Story Emphasizes
The prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) is not a claim Muslims make without evidence. The Quran itself bears witness to it:
- The Quran's preservation and content — 1,400 years later, the Quran stands unchanged, as a sign of its divine source
- The message of Tawheed — identical to the message of all the prophets before him
- His character — documented in one of the most detailed biographical records of any historical figure
- His reach — billions follow his teaching across every culture and language

The message is complete. After Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him), no new prophet will come. The Quran he brought is the final, preserved revelation. Humanity has everything it needs.
Love of the Prophet must stay within Tawheed. Muslims love Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) deeply — he himself said that no one has true faith until he is more beloved to them than their family, their wealth, and all of creation. But this love is expressed through following him and obeying ALLAH — not through worship of him. Worship belongs to ALLAH alone.
His example is available. Unlike many historical figures, the life of Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) is among the most documented in history. His words, actions, and character are preserved in the Sunnah. His example is accessible to anyone who seeks it.

No. Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) is loved and followed, but he is not worshipped. Worship belongs to ALLAH alone — this is the core of his message. Muslims believe that worshipping him would violate the very teaching he gave his life to convey. The Islamic declaration of faith is: "There is no deity except ALLAH, and Muhammad is the Messenger of ALLAH." The two are clearly distinct.
In one sense yes — in the sense that he brought the final and complete form of Islam. But Muslims understand Islam as the religion of all the prophets — the submission to ALLAH that Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (Peace Be Upon Them All) all practiced and preached. The Quran does not give a detailed reason.
