The Story
The Miraculous Birth of Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him)
Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) was a devout woman, dedicated to worship. She withdrew to a private place in the east. The Quran records what happened:
فَأَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهَا رُوحَنَا فَتَمَثَّلَ لَهَا بَشَرًا سَوِيًّا
“And We sent to her Our spirit, and he appeared before her in the form of a well-proportioned man.”
Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) was frightened. ALLAH's messenger told her:
قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَنَا رَسُولُ رَبِّكِ لِأَهَبَ لَكِ غُلَامًا زَكِيًّا
“He said: I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.”
She said: how can I have a boy, when no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste? The answer from ALLAH was:
قَالَ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٌ وَلِنَجْعَلَهُ آيَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَرَحْمَةً مِّنَّا
“He said: Such is the case. Your Lord says: It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us.”
The Quran confirms the miraculous birth — Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) was born without a father. The comparison the Quran draws is to Adam (Peace Be Upon Him):
إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَىٰ عِندَ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ خَلَقَهُ مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ
“Indeed, the likeness of Isa to ALLAH is as the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, 'Be,' and he was.”
If Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) could be created without parents, Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) could be created without a father. The miraculous birth is a sign — not evidence of divinity.
Speaking as an Infant
When Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) returned to her people with the infant, they accused her. She pointed to the child. And the infant Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) spoke:
قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا
“He said: Indeed, I am the servant of ALLAH. He has given me the scripture and made me a prophet.”
His very first words as an infant established the Islamic position: he is the servant of ALLAH — 'Abd Allah. Not ALLAH, not the son of ALLAH — His servant and prophet.
He continued in the cradle:
وَأَوْصَانِي بِالصَّلَاةِ وَالزَّكَاةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا
“And He has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive.”
His Miracles — Always by ALLAH's Permission
The Quran confirms multiple miracles of Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him). They are always described with the phrase "bi idhnillah" — by the permission of ALLAH. This is not incidental — it is theologically deliberate:
أَنِّي قَدْ جِئْتُكُم بِآيَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ أَنِّي أَخْلُقُ لَكُم مِّنَ الطِّينِ كَهَيْئَةِ الطَّيْرِ فَأَنفُخُ فِيهِ فَيَكُونُ طَيْرًا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَأُبْرِئُ الْأَكْمَهَ وَالْأَبْرَصَ وَأُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ
“I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of ALLAH. And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead — by permission of ALLAH.”
These are extraordinary miracles. But they were granted to him by ALLAH — they were not acts performed by his own divine power. Every miracle was ALLAH's act through His prophet.
His Message — Worship ALLAH Alone
The core of Isa's (Jesus') message is stated clearly in the Quran. He told his people:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَبِّي وَرَبُّكُمْ فَاعْبُدُوهُ هَٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُّسْتَقِيمٌ
“Indeed, ALLAH is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path.”
لَّقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ وَقَالَ الْمَسِيحُ يَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ رَبِّي وَرَبَّكُمْ
“They have certainly disbelieved who say that ALLAH is the Messiah, the son of Maryam, while the Messiah has said: O Children of Israel, worship ALLAH, my Lord and your Lord.”
Islam holds that Isa's (Jesus') original message was pure monotheism — the same message as all prophets before him. He was given the Injeel (Gospel) as a scripture confirming the Torah before it and bringing guidance for his people (Quran 5:46).
Isa (Jesus) Was Not Crucified — ALLAH Raised Him
This is one of the clearest and most significant differences between the Islamic and Christian understanding of Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him). The Quran states directly:
وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ وَإِنَّ الَّذِينَ اخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ لَفِي شَكٍّ مِّنْهُ مَا لَهُم بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِلَّا اتِّبَاعَ الظَّنِّ
“And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption.”
بَل رَّفَعَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا
“Rather, ALLAH raised him to Himself. And ALLAH is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.”
This is a fundamental Islamic belief: Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) was not killed on the cross. ALLAH protected him and raised him. The details of what exactly occurred — and who, if anyone, was crucified — are matters of scholarly discussion. The Quranic affirmation is clear: ALLAH did not allow His prophet to be killed in this manner.
Isa (Jesus) Is Not the Son of ALLAH
The Quran addresses the Christian doctrine of the Trinity and the divine sonship of Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) with clarity and respect:
إِنَّمَا الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاهَا إِلَىٰ مَرْيَمَ وَرُوحٌ مِّنْهُ فَلَا تَقُولُوا ثَلَاثَةٌ انتَهُوا خَيْرًا لَّكُمْ إِنَّمَا اللَّهُ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ
“The Messiah, Isa, the son of Maryam, was but a messenger of ALLAH and His word which He directed to Maryam and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in ALLAH and His messengers. And do not say, 'Three'; desist — it is better for you. Indeed, ALLAH is but one God.”
مَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ مِن وَلَدٍ سُبْحَانَهُ
“It is not befitting for ALLAH that He should take a son. Exalted is He.”
Islam holds that ALLAH is beyond any limitation — including the need for or possibility of a child or partner. The Quran does not say this to diminish Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) — it says it to honor the absolute uniqueness and perfection of ALLAH.
Isa (Jesus) Will Return
Islam holds that Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) is alive, raised by ALLAH, and will return to earth before the Day of Judgment. This is established in authentic hadith:
"The Hour will not be established until the son of Maryam [Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him)] descends among you as a just ruler, he will break the cross, kill the pig, and abolish the jizyah. Wealth will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it (as charitable gifts)."
Isa's return — a shared belief with Christians?
Both Muslims and Christians believe in the return of Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) before the end of times. The nature and purpose of his return is understood differently between the two faiths. In Islamic belief, he returns as a just ruler who submits to ALLAH — completing his prophethood and his role as a servant of ALLAH, not as a divine being.
What the Quran Emphasizes
The Quran presents Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) as one of the mightiest messengers — honored, loved, protected by ALLAH. The Quran does not diminish him. What it corrects is the elevation of him to divinity, which the Quran regards as the one error his own followers fell into after him.
The Quran shows that Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) himself will disavow the claim that he was worshipped on the Day of Judgment:
مَا قُلْتُ لَهُمْ إِلَّا مَا أَمَرْتَنِي بِهِ أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ رَبِّي وَرَبَّكُمْ
“I said not to them except what You commanded me — to worship ALLAH, my Lord and your Lord.”
Lessons for Us Today
Honoring a prophet does not mean worshipping him. Islam honors Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) deeply — no Muslim's faith is complete without believing in him. But honor and worship are different. All true honor is directed to ALLAH.
ALLAH protects His prophets. He did not allow Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) to be killed. He raised him. This is ALLAH's way with those He chooses.
The miraculous birth is a sign, not a basis for divinity. Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) had no parents at all — yet no one claims he was divine. A miracle at birth is ALLAH's sign, not a transfer of divinity.
The prophets' message has always been one. From Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) to Ibrahim (Abraham) (Peace Be Upon Him) to Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) to Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) to Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) — the message has never changed: worship ALLAH alone.
