ٱلْحَكِيم — Al-Hakim — The All-Wise, The Perfectly Wise
Every decree, every action, every command, every revelation flows from perfect wisdom. Nothing is arbitrary.
Al-Hakim appears in the Quran dozens of times — and almost always alongside Al-Aziz (the Almighty). The pairing is one of the Quran's most important theological pairings: absolute power and perfect wisdom together. ALLAH does not act from power alone, and His wisdom is never without power to implement it. Everything that comes from Al-Hakim comes from both.
What This Name Means
The Arabic root h-k-m (ح-ك-م) gives rise to several connected meanings:
- Hikmah — wisdom, sound judgment
- Hukm — ruling, judgment, decree
- Hakim — the wise one, the one who makes sound judgments
Al-Hakim as ALLAH's name means:
- His knowledge and judgment are perfect — He sees all dimensions of every matter

Human wisdom is partial — we see some factors, miss others, judge by limited information, and make mistakes. ALLAH's wisdom is complete. He sees every cause and every consequence. He knows what we cannot know. His judgments are true.
Evidence from the Quran
رَبَّنَا وَٱبْعَثْ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
“Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”
Ibrahim (Abraham) and Ismail (Ishmael) (Peace Be Upon Them) close their du'a for a prophet — a du'a answered in Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) — with these two names: Al-Aziz, Al-Hakim. The prayer is for the teaching of the Book and hikmah (wisdom). They ask this from the One who is Himself the source of all wisdom.
ذَٰلِكَ يُوعَظُ بِهِۦ مَن كَانَ مِنكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ ۚ وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مَخْرَجًا وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُۥٓ
“That is instructed to whoever of you believes in ALLAH and the Last Day. And whoever fears ALLAH — He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon ALLAH — then He is sufficient for him.”
يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُبَيِّنَ لَكُمْ وَيَهْدِيَكُمْ سُنَنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَيَتُوبَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
“ALLAH wants to make clear to you and guide you to the ways of those before you and to accept your repentance. And ALLAH is Knowing and Wise.”
Every command ALLAH gives has a reason — He wants to clarify, guide, and accept repentance. The laws of Islam are not arbitrary — they flow from Al-Alim Al-Hakim: the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.
وَلَوْ أَنَّ مَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن شَجَرَةٍ أَقْلَٰمٌ وَٱلْبَحْرُ يَمُدُّهُۥ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ سَبْعَةُ أَبْحُرٍ مَّا نَفِدَتْ كَلِمَٰتُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
“And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven more seas, the words of ALLAH would not be exhausted. Indeed, ALLAH is Exalted in Might and Wise.”
The wisdom of ALLAH — kalimat ALLAH, His words — could not be exhausted if every tree were a pen and every sea were ink. Its depth is infinite. And the verse closes: Azizun Hakim — the Almighty, the Wise.
What This Name Teaches About ALLAH
Al-Hakim teaches that trust in ALLAH is not blind. It is informed trust — placed in the One whose wisdom is perfect and whose knowledge is complete.
When a believer faces something they do not understand — a difficult decree, an unanswered prayer, a hardship that seems senseless — Al-Hakim is the name that provides the framework: the One who decreed this is not arbitrary. He sees what you cannot see. His wisdom reaches into causes and consequences you do not have access to.
This is not a statement that hardship is good. The Quran validates the reality of pain and difficulty. But it grounds that pain in a context: ALLAH is Al-Hakim. The wise do not always explain their reasons; the All-Wise has reasons that exceed our capacity to fully comprehend.
Hikmah in Practice
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) was described as teaching the Book and wisdom (hikmah) (Quran 2:129). Muslim scholars have discussed the relationship between revelation and hikmah — the wisdom of knowing how to apply what has been revealed, in the right way, at the right time, for the right purpose. Seeking this kind of wisdom is a lifelong pursuit.
Effect on Worship
Al-Hakim is invoked in du'a when a believer is struggling to understand — when ALLAH's decree seems difficult or unclear. Calling on ALLAH as Al-Hakim is an acknowledgment: I do not see Your wisdom fully, but I trust that it is there.
The Quran teaches that accepting ALLAH's decrees with patience and trust is part of faith. Al-Hakim provides the reason that trust is not naive: it is placed in the One whose wisdom is real, complete, and beyond question.
Du'a Reflection
Ya Hakim, allimni min hikmatik — O All-Wise, teach me from Your wisdom. This du'a asks Al-Hakim to share a portion of what He knows — guidance, clarity, and the ability to judge well. The source of all hikmah is Al-Hakim; asking for it from Him is turning toward the right source.
Common Questions
This is one of the deepest questions in theology, and it deserves honest engagement. The Islamic answer is not a simple dismissal of the question. The Quran acknowledges difficulty, pain, and loss as real. What Islamic theology holds is that ALLAH's wisdom sees dimensions of every situation that we cannot see — causes, consequences, purposes, and outcomes that are beyond human perception. The testing of believers is described in the Quran as a means of refinement, witness, and elevation in rank (Quran 2:155–157). This does not make pain easy. It provides a frame: the One who decreed it is not indifferent, not ignorant, and not without wisdom.
Because the two names balance each other. Power without wisdom can become oppression. Wisdom without power can be rendered ineffective. Al-Aziz Al-Hakim together mean: ALLAH's decrees are both backed by absolute power and guided by perfect wisdom. His commands are not just strong — they are wise. His judgments are not just wise — they will be executed. For the believer facing difficulty, both together are a source of trust: this situation is known by One who has the power to change it and the wisdom to know when and how to do so.
Muslim scholars have generally held that the commands of ALLAH are wise — rooted in benefit (*maslaha*) for human beings — even when the specific wisdom is not always apparent to us. Quran 4:26 makes this explicit: ALLAH gives His commands to guide people, bring clarity, and accept their repentance. Understanding the wisdom of a ruling may require learning; some wisdom may be apparent to scholars but not to all people; some wisdom may be known fully only to ALLAH. The trust placed in Al-Hakim is not the trust of the ignorant, but of the one who recognizes that their knowledge has limits and ALLAH's does not.
