Wudu is the ritual purification required before prayer. It is simple to learn. This lesson explains each step clearly so you can begin praying with confidence.
Wudu is the ritual purification that Muslims perform before the five daily prayers. It involves washing specific parts of the body with clean water. ALLAH commanded it in the Quran:
Quran 5:6
Wudu is not only physical hygiene — it is an act of worship and preparation. It prepares your body and mind for standing before ALLAH in prayer.
The good news: it is simple. Most people can learn the basic steps in a single sitting.
Perform each step in order. Each wash is ideally done three times, though once is sufficient for the wudu to be valid.
Right before left: When washing limbs (arms and feet), always start with the right side before the left. This is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him).
Your wudu remains valid until one of the following occurs:
If your wudu is broken, simply perform it again before the next prayer.
When you are first learning, read through the steps once. Then go to the sink and practice them in order. Do this a few times until it feels natural.
After a week of practice, wudu will feel like a normal part of preparing for prayer. Many Muslims do it so often it becomes second nature.
If you are unsure whether you did something correctly, do it again. Wudu is meant to be simple, not a source of constant doubt.
Remember: ALLAH knows you are learning. Performing wudu sincerely — even imperfectly at first — is an act of worship. He sees your effort.
Next Step
Now that you know how to perform wudu, the next step is to begin learning salah — the five daily prayers.
