Salah is the backbone of a Muslim's daily life. This lesson explains the five prayers, the basic structure of each prayer, and how to start praying now — even before you have mastered every detail.
Salah — the five daily prayers — is the second pillar of Islam. ALLAH commanded it directly in the Quran, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) demonstrated exactly how to perform it.
Quran 4:103
Salah is not optional. It is the most consistent act of worship a Muslim does — five times every single day, for the rest of their life. This is both the challenge and the beauty: it keeps you connected to ALLAH throughout the day.
Quran 29:45
Prayer does not just fulfill an obligation — it shapes you. It pulls you away from what is harmful and keeps you returning to what matters.
Each prayer has a name, a time window, and a number of rak'ahs (units of prayer):
As a new Muslim, your goal for the first weeks is simply to pray all five — even if they are imperfect. Consistency matters more than perfection right now.
Hadith — Sahih al-Bukhari 8 / Sahih Muslim 16
Every prayer follows the same basic sequence of postures and recitations. Here is a simplified walkthrough of a single rak'ah (unit):
The Prophet's instruction: The Prophet ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “Pray as you have seen me praying.” This is why learning the method matters — but it also means you learn it by doing it.
Many new Muslims wait too long to begin praying because they feel they need to know everything first. This is understandable — but it is a mistake.
You learn salah by doing salah. A prayer said imperfectly is still a prayer. ALLAH knows you are a beginner. Your effort is not wasted.
Quran 2:43
One prayer at a time: If five prayers feels overwhelming, begin with just one — Fajr or Maghrib are often easiest to start with. Once that prayer feels normal, add another. Within weeks you will be praying all five.
Next Step
Beyond salah, learn how to connect with ALLAH through the Quran and du'a every day — without feeling overwhelmed.
