Short Summary
Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) is the prophet mentioned most frequently in the Quran. He was born in danger, raised in the very palace of his oppressor, heard ALLAH's voice directly at a burning bush, and confronted Pharaoh with signs and miracles. His story is the Quran's most detailed account of a prophet — a story of courage against tyranny, the power of ALLAH over all earthly power, and the guidance of a people who had been enslaved and broken.
Who Was Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him)?
Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) is described in the Quran with the title Kalimullah — he who spoke directly with ALLAH. Unlike other prophets who received revelation through the angel Jibreel (Gabriel), the Quran emphasizes that ALLAH spoke to Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) directly:
وَكَلَّمَ اللَّهُ مُوسَىٰ تَكْلِيمًا
“And ALLAH spoke to Musa with [direct] speech.”
He was also given the Tawrah (Torah) as a scripture for the Children of Israel (Bani Isra'il), and his story occupies more space in the Quran than that of any other prophet.
The Story
Born in Danger
Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) was born at a time when Pharaoh — the ruler of Egypt — was slaughtering the newborn sons of the Israelites out of fear of a prophecy that a son of theirs would overthrow him.
“Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a sector among them, slaughtering their sons and keeping their women alive.”
ALLAH inspired Musa's (Moses') mother to place her infant in a chest and cast him into the river, promising her that He would return her son to her and make him a messenger.
“And We inspired the mother of Musa: Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve.”
The chest was found by Pharaoh's household — and his wife prevailed in keeping the infant alive. In one of the Quran's great ironies, the man who was trying to kill the children of Israel was raising the very prophet who would undo his power.
The infant Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) would not accept milk from any nurse. ALLAH had arranged this so that his own mother would be called:
وَحَرَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ الْمَرَاضِعَ مِن قَبْلُ فَقَالَتْ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ يَكْفُلُونَهُ لَكُمْ
“And We had forbidden him all wet nurses before, so she said: Shall I direct you to a household that will nurse him for you?”
So Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) was returned to his own mother — raised by her while living in Pharaoh's palace.
Fleeing to Madyan
When Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) had grown up, an incident occurred in which he struck a man who died. Though it was unintentional and the man was an oppressor, Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) left Egypt and fled to Madyan. The Quran records his dua upon arriving:
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ
“My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need.”
In Madyan he lived, worked, and married. ALLAH was preparing him.
ALLAH Speaks to Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him)
After years in Madyan, Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) was traveling with his family when he saw a fire in the distance. He went toward it — and at that moment, his life changed forever.
“But when he came to it, he was called: O Musa — Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.”
ALLAH identified Himself, commanded Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) to remove his sandals in this sacred space, and declared His identity:
إِنَّنِي أَنَا اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدْنِي وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِذِكْرِي
“Indeed, I am ALLAH. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.”
The burning bush — from the Quran
The Quran confirms this encounter (Quran 20:9-16, 28:29-35, 27:7-9). Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) heard ALLAH's voice directly — this is why he holds the title Kalimullah. The Quran describes the place as a sacred valley and records the divine speech itself.
ALLAH then gave Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) two signs: his staff turned to a serpent when he threw it (Quran 20:17-21), and his hand emerged white and luminous when he drew it from his garment (Quran 20:22). These would be his signs before Pharaoh.
Confronting Pharaoh
ALLAH sent Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) and his brother Harun (Aaron) (Peace Be Upon Him) to Pharaoh with the message: let the Children of Israel go.
Pharaoh's response was the ultimate expression of human arrogance — he claimed divinity himself:
فَقَالَ أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْأَعْلَىٰ
“And he said: I am your lord, the Most High.”
Pharaoh demanded a contest. He gathered the best magicians in Egypt to compete with Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him). They cast their staffs and ropes, which appeared to move like snakes. Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) cast his staff — and it swallowed all that they had made.
The magicians — experts who recognized that what Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) had done was no trick — fell down in prostration:
فَأُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سَاجِدِينَ قَالُوا آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
“And the magicians fell down in prostration. They said: We have believed in the Lord of the worlds.”
Pharaoh was furious. He threatened them. They replied — now believers — with words the Quran records as a model of courage before a tyrant (Quran 7:125-126).
The Exodus — Parting the Sea
After ALLAH sent signs against Pharaoh and his people and Pharaoh still refused to release the Children of Israel, Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) led them out of Egypt by night. Pharaoh pursued them with his army. When they reached the sea and Pharaoh's army was behind them, the followers of Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) cried out in fear.
“Then We inspired to Musa: Strike with your staff the sea, and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.”
The Children of Israel crossed. Pharaoh and his army followed — and the sea closed over them.
ALLAH Preserves Pharaoh's Body as a Sign
As Pharaoh was drowning, he declared belief. The Quran records this moment — and ALLAH's response:
فَالْيَوْمَ نُنَجِّيكَ بِبَدَنِكَ لِتَكُونَ لِمَنْ خَلْفَكَ آيَةً
“So today We will save you in body that you may be to those who come after you a sign.”
A remarkable Quranic claim
The Quran states that Pharaoh's body was preserved as a sign for future generations (Quran 10:92). This was stated in the 7th century CE. Some scholars and researchers have noted the existence of preserved pharaonic mummies in Egypt. This is often cited by Muslims as a sign of the Quran's truth. The connection is a matter of reflection, not a claim the Quran makes explicitly.
What the Quran Emphasizes
Musa's (Moses') story is repeated more than any other in the Quran — appearing in over 30 chapters. The consistent emphases are:
- ALLAH is with the oppressed. The most powerful man on earth could not stop ALLAH's plan for a people he was persecuting.
- Tawakkul — reliance on ALLAH. At every impossible moment, from his mother casting him in the river to the parting of the sea, the answer was to trust ALLAH and act.
- Arrogance destroys. Pharaoh's story is told as a permanent warning. His power, his wealth, and his army could not save him from ALLAH's judgment.
- ALLAH's speech with Musa. The title Kalimullah — He Who Spoke With ALLAH — is a unique honor the Quran specifically emphasizes for Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him).
Lessons for Us Today
One person with ALLAH's support can face any power. Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) stood before the most powerful ruler of his time with nothing but a staff and the word of ALLAH. The lesson the Quran draws: it is not about your resources — it is about whose side you are on.
ALLAH's plan works through apparent weakness. An infant in a basket in a river. A man who fled from a murder charge. A shepherd in a foreign land. ALLAH was preparing His messenger in circumstances that looked like failure.
Courage is required. The magicians who believed faced Pharaoh's wrath immediately. Their response is a model: when you see the truth, state it, regardless of the cost.
Sincere repentance must come before the punishment arrives. Pharaoh's belief as he was drowning was not accepted. The Quran teaches that repentance has a moment — do not delay.
Common Questions
No. The Quran refers to Pharaoh (Firaun) as a title, not a proper name, and does not identify him historically. We do not specify which historical ruler this was.
The Quran itself does not give a single reason, but scholars note that Musa's (Moses') story contains many dimensions relevant to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) and his community: confronting powerful opposition, guiding a community that repeatedly doubted, receiving a divine scripture, and the nature of prophethood itself.
The Quran affirms that ALLAH revealed the Tawrah (Torah) to Musa (Moses) (Peace Be Upon Him) as a scripture of guidance and light (Quran 5:44). Islam holds that the original divine scripture has been altered over time. The Quran is ALLAH's final, preserved revelation.
