Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) was the first human being and the first prophet. Who Was Adam (Peace Be Upon Him)?
Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) is the father of all humanity. Every human being alive today descends from him. ALLAH did not just create him — He honored him in ways described nowhere else in the Quran for any created being: He shaped him with His own hands, breathed into him from His divine spirit, commanded the angels to bow before him, and taught him knowledge that the angels themselves did not possess.
He was also the first prophet — the first human being sent with guidance from ALLAH to live on this earth.
The Story
ALLAH's Creation of Adam (Peace Be Upon Him)
ALLAH announced to the angels His intention to place a vicegerent — a steward — on earth. The angels asked a question:
قَالُوا أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ الدِّمَاءَ وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ
“They said: Will You place upon it one who causes corruption and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?”
ALLAH replied that He knows what they do not know.
ALLAH then created Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) from clay. The Quran describes this act in two dimensions — the physical and the spiritual:
ثُمَّ سَوَّاهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِ
“Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] spirit.”
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ
“So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down to him in prostration.”
This breathing of the divine spirit into Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) is the source of the special dignity ALLAH gave to all human beings. It is not shared with any other created being on earth.
ALLAH Teaches Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) the Names
Then ALLAH did something that demonstrated why He chose this creation over others: He taught Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) the names of all things.
وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ
“And He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels.”
The angels could not name what ALLAH had shown them. When Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) named them all, the angels acknowledged:
سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا
“Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us.”
This was ALLAH's answer to the angels' earlier question. The capacity for knowledge, language, and understanding that ALLAH placed in Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) — and through him in all humans — is the basis of humanity's honored role on earth.
The Prostration — and Iblis's Refusal
ALLAH commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam (Peace Be Upon Him). This was not an act of worship — it was an act of honor commanded by ALLAH, the way a soldier stands at attention when commanded by his commander.
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ
“And [mention] when We said to the angels: Prostrate before Adam; so they prostrated, except for Iblis. He refused and was arrogant.”
Iblis — who would become Shaytan — refused. His reason was arrogance, not ignorance:
قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ
“He said: I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”
This is the first recorded act of arrogance in creation — and the Quran uses Iblis as the permanent warning against pride.
The Garden and the Test
ALLAH permitted Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) and his wife to dwell in a garden and eat freely from it, with one prohibition: do not approach a specific tree.
وَيَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ
“And: O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree.”
A note on this garden
The Quran refers to this garden but does not explicitly identify it as the Garden of Paradise (Jannah) that believers will enter in the Hereafter. Scholars have differing views on this question. We present the Quranic text as it is, without specifying what this garden was.
Iblis deceived both Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) and his wife, and they ate from the tree. The Quran is explicit: both of them were responsible together.
فَدَلَّاهُمَا بِغُرُورٍ
“And he brought them down through deception.”
This is a significant difference from the Biblical account, which places the blame primarily on Eve. The Quran does not do this. Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) and his wife shared equally in the mistake — and shared equally in the repentance that followed.
Repentance and ALLAH's Forgiveness
When Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) and his wife realized what they had done, they turned immediately to ALLAH with words of repentance that the Quran records for all time:
قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
“They said: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”
ALLAH forgave them completely:
فَتَلَقَّىٰ آدَمُ مِن رَّبِّهِ كَلِمَاتٍ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ
“Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance.”
The Islamic concept of original sin
Islam does not teach original sin. Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) and his wife made a mistake, repented, and were forgiven. Their sin was not inherited by their descendants. Every human being is born in a state of purity (fitrah) and is responsible only for their own actions.
What the Quran Emphasizes
The Quran tells the story of Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) in multiple surahs — in Surah Al-Baqarah (2), Al-A'raf (7), Al-Hijr (15), Al-Kahf (18), Ta-Ha (20), Al-Anbiya (21), Sad (38), and elsewhere. Each retelling emphasizes different aspects. The consistent themes are:

Lessons for Us Today
All humans share one origin. Every human being descends from Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) and his wife. The Quran uses this to ground human equality and brotherhood — no race, tribe, or nation is superior to another by birth.
ALLAH honored humanity. The divine spirit breathed into Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) is in every human being. This is why human life is sacred in Islam.
Arrogance is the root sin. Iblis was not ignorant — he knew ALLAH's command and refused out of pride. The Quran holds this up as the permanent warning: arrogance before ALLAH leads to destruction.
