Many Christians are surprised to discover how deeply Islam honors Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her). She is described as the best of all women — and an entire chapter of the Quran, Surah Maryam (Chapter 19), is named after her. This step explores her station, her story, and how Islam understands her role.
A common assumption among Christians is that Islam either ignores Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) or treats her poorly. The reality surprises many: Islam honors Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) with a reverence that few expect.
She is the only woman mentioned by name in the entire Quran. An entire chapter — Surah Maryam, Chapter 19 — is named after her. She is described by ALLAH as chosen, purified, and preferred above all women of her time. She is a model of faith, purity, and complete submission to ALLAH.
Understanding how Islam honors Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) — and where it differs from the Catholic and Orthodox treatment of her — is important for any Christian exploring Islam.
The Quran's statement about Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) is unambiguous:
Quran 3:42
"Preferred you above all the women of the worlds" — this is an extraordinary statement. Islamic scholars hold that this refers to her time, her era, and perhaps broadly to her station as the greatest woman to ever live.
She was devoted to worship from childhood, raised in the temple, and placed under the care of the prophet Zakariyya (Zechariah) (Peace Be Upon Him). ALLAH provided her with miraculous food from paradise while she worshipped in her prayer chamber — a sign of her exceptional closeness to ALLAH.
Quran 3:37
The Quran narrates the story of the birth of Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him) in Surah Maryam (Chapter 19) in vivid and moving detail. An angel — described as coming in the form of a man — appeared to Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) while she was in seclusion. She feared him and sought refuge in ALLAH. He told her he was a messenger of ALLAH sent to give her a pure son.
She asked how she could have a son when no man had touched her. The angel replied:
Quran 19:21
Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) withdrew to a distant place, gave birth under a palm tree, and endured the physical pain and emotional anguish alone. ALLAH then commanded her to return to her people — and when they challenged her, ALLAH directed her to point to the infant Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him), who then spoke from the cradle in one of his first miracles:
Quran 19:30–33
The Quran describes Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) as a siddiqah — a woman of absolute truthfulness and deep sincerity. She is cited alongside the wife of Pharaoh as one of the two greatest models for the believers:
Quran 66:12
Her defining characteristics in the Quran are: faith in ALLAH's words, complete obedience (qunut), and protection of her chastity. These are the qualities for which ALLAH honored her above all women.
Christianity — particularly Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy — honors Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) in ways that go beyond Islam's understanding of her. These include:
Islam rejects all of these practices and doctrines — not because Islam disrespects her, but because they elevate her beyond what ALLAH designated for her. In Islam, no human being — however noble — is to be prayed to or treated as having divine qualities or authority. Worship and supplication belong to ALLAH alone.
The Islamic position: Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) was the greatest of all women. She is to be loved, respected, and learned from. She is not to be prayed to, venerated as semi-divine, or made an intercessor between the worshipper and ALLAH. ALLAH is directly accessible to every person.
The fact that an entire chapter of the Quran is named after Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) — Chapter 19, revealed to Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) in Makkah over 1,400 years ago — is itself a statement of her status in Islam.
No chapter is named after any of the male prophets — not Ibrahim (Abraham), not Musa (Moses), not Muhammad ﷺ (Peace Be Upon Him) himself. Surah Maryam stands as a permanent, preserved testament to her honor in Islamic scripture.
Surah Maryam covers her story, the story of Zakariyya (Zechariah) (Peace Be Upon Him) and the birth of Yahya (John) (Peace Be Upon Him), the announcement and birth of Isa (Jesus) (Peace Be Upon Him), and a series of reflections on the prophets and the nature of ALLAH. It is one of the most beautiful chapters in the Quran.
Does Islam believe Maryam (Mary) was sinless?
Islam does not use the concept of "original sin" — so the Immaculate Conception doctrine does not apply in an Islamic framework. ALLAH describes Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) as purified — which Muslims understand as ALLAH choosing her and preserving her from what would have prevented her from her great role. The details of this purification are matters of Islamic scholarship.
Can I pray to Maryam (Mary) in Islam?
No. In Islam, prayer (du'a) is an act of worship directed to ALLAH alone. Praying to anyone other than ALLAH — however noble — is considered shirk (associating partners with ALLAH). A Muslim who wishes to invoke Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) does so by asking ALLAH to bless her and by learning from her example.
Is Maryam (Mary) a prophet in Islam?
This is a point of scholarly discussion. The majority of classical Islamic scholars hold that prophethood was given only to men. A minority view holds that Maryam (Mary) (Peace Be Upon Her) and a small number of women received direct communication from ALLAH that elevates them. Her station in Islam is extraordinary regardless of how this question is resolved.
